Welcome Back to School!

Principal’s Blog

Mr. Bailey helps a student prepare for their first day of school.

We are excited to start the 2017-2018 school year!  We’ve had a fantastic start – supporting students as they find their lockers, learn how to go through the lunch line, and board the correct school bus.  With a summer of reflection time behind us, the beginning of a new school year is a time to review our practices, try new strategies, and build in new connections.  I’ve spent this first week trying to learn the names of our students who have moved from another school, from out of state, or from out of country.  It’s fun and exciting to hear their stories and share with them in the nervousness of new beginnings.

As a whole school team, we are always discussing new ways to improve student learning.  We know that in order to improve learning, we must function as a healthy team in a beloved community.  This year, our leadership team is reading a book called The Art of Coaching Teams: Building Resilient Communities that Transform Schools by Elena Aguilar.  The book was recommended to me from a wise colleague who teaches at UW and WWU.  I knew this was the right book when in the Introduction, it tasks us with creating “the kinds of healthy community that will be able to serve the social, academic, and emotional needs of all children.”

Thank you for entrusting your children to our care.  We are honored to serve as partners in their growth, development, and learning.  The first core belief of The Bellingham Promise is: We believe all children should be loved.  Everyday, our goal is that your child leaves Kulshan knowing this.

With Thunderbird Pride,

Meagan Dawson
